The following art/natural history workshops are open to both students and community members.  All participants must register online for the workshops. There are separate registrations for both students and community members. Space is limited so register right away.

Relief Printmaking with Emily Underwood

Saturday October 21, 2017  10am-4pm at the Norris Center

heron-printThis workshop will introduce techniques for linoleum-block printmaking that you can do at home, without a press. Draw inspiration from the natural history collection at the Norris Center, or bring your own images or artwork you would like to transfer to a print. Learn everything you need to know to make your own holiday cards! No prior experience needed.

Illustrating birds with Megan Gnekow

Sunday October 29, 2017 10am-4pm at the Norris Center

falconUsing both preserved specimens and video of living birds, we will discuss and practice the fundamentals of illustrating the diverse forms that birds take. We’ll explore form and function of various aspects of avian anatomy as well as the many challenges birds present to the artist (iridescence! movement! proportion!). All supplies are included but participants are welcome to bring any art supplies they are comfortable using. No experience necessary!

Drawing on the Coast with Erika Perloff

Saturday, November 11 12-4pm at Younger Lagoon Reserve, Westside Santa Cruz

santa cruz coastCome explore UC's Younger Lagoon Reserve along the western edge of Santa Cruz through drawing in its diverse habitats. We'll practice a variety of observational drawing techniques while studying the flora, fauna and geological features of the area with pen and pencil.  Drawing from life is a great way to learn about and connect with nature as well as being relaxing and fun. No previous art experience required. Materials provided. Bring lunch or snacks, water, warm and waterproof clothing, sturdy shoes, a portable stool if desired.

Painting Butterflies & Moths with Maryjo Koch

Saturday, November 18, 10-4pm at the Norris Center

buckeyeLearn how to paint colorful and iridescent butterflies and fuzzy moths on toned or black paper using watercolor and gouache. Capture the beauty of their lovely wings, their markings, and different colors. Learn how to accurately draw them so that each wing matches the other perfectly. All supplies included but bring your own if you have them.
